Gemini Gems vs Skills: What Changes on November 17

Custom AI assistant migrating into stackable skills with backed-up instructions and an access gate

Google is retiring Gemini Gems. An in-app notice first reported by 9to5Google on September 27, 2026, and confirmed by TechCrunch a day later, says Gems will start migrating automatically to “skills” on November 17, 2026. If you run a small business and someone on your team built a Gem to draft quotes, answer customer emails, or summarize reports, the Gemini Gems vs skills question is now a real operational decision, not a curiosity. The catch almost nobody is leading with: Gems are free for every Gemini user today, and skills are currently limited to paid Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.

The 60-second summary

Gemini Gems vs skills: what’s actually different

A Gem is Gemini with standing instructions. You set it up once (“you are our service desk assistant, use this tone, reference this price sheet”), attach reference files, and share it with a link. Think of it as a temp worker with a manual on their desk: every time you walk over, they already know the job.

A skill is closer to a procedure you pull out of a drawer in the middle of a meeting. You stay in your normal Gemini conversation, type “/”, and call the skill you need. The big functional gain is stacking: one skill can pull numbers from a sales file while another writes the summary for your partner, in the same request.

That’s why search interest right now is so specific. People are typing “gemini gems vs skills”, “gemini skills vs gems”, and even “gemini gems vs claude skills”, because the skill model looks a lot like the reusable-capability approach other AI platforms already use.

What the details really mean

“Automatic migration, no action needed.” True for your content. It doesn’t solve the business problem. If a Gem lives in an employee’s free Gmail account and skills stay paid-only, the migration preserves something you may not be able to use without upgrading.

The October 13 date. Some outlets report that creating and editing Gems will be disabled starting October 13. The official notice quoted by 9to5Google and TechCrunch doesn’t mention it, so treat it as possible, not confirmed. The safe move: if you plan to tweak a Gem, do it before mid-October.

The announcement arrived early. When the notice appeared, the help article and the “Create skills” button weren’t working yet. Expect more details over the next few weeks. If Google confirms free access to skills, most of the risk in this article drops sharply.

The honest read: this is not a disaster. It’s a format change with a pricing question attached. What it exposes is bigger: a lot of small businesses run real processes on a free feature of a platform that can change the rules with seven weeks’ notice.

What it costs, in plain numbers

What this means for your business

1. Inventory your Gems this week

Ask your team who uses Gems and for what. It’s common to find your best salesperson has a Gem loaded with your full price list and objection handling, sitting in their personal account. If they leave, that knowledge walks out with them, migration or not.

2. Back up the instructions outside Gemini

Copy each Gem’s instructions into a company document and store its reference files in a shared folder. It’s a 30-minute job, and it keeps you free to run the same instructions in Gemini, ChatGPT, or Claude. If you’re weighing platforms, our ChatGPT for Business vs Claude comparison covers the trade-offs.

3. Separate personal productivity from business processes

A Gem that polishes your emails can stay personal. A Gem that answers quotes or customers is a business process, and it should live in a company account or a proper integration. If it’s repetitive and high-volume, it’s really an automation candidate: see how we approach business process automation, or start with our guide to automating your business with AI.

A decision checklist before November 17

  1. List every Gem your team uses, who owns it, and which account it lives in.
  2. Tag each one as personal productivity or business process.
  3. Copy instructions and files into a company repository.
  4. Make any edits before mid-October in case the October 13 cutoff is confirmed.
  5. For business processes, choose: paid seat, company account, or a different tool.
  6. Check again in late October whether Google has clarified free access to skills.

FAQ

Will I lose my Gemini Gems?

No, according to Google’s notice. Starting November 17, 2026, Gems migrate automatically to skills with their instructions and files. What isn’t confirmed is whether free accounts can keep using them.

Are Gemini skills free?

Not today. Only Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can create them. Google hasn’t said whether a free tier will exist after the migration.

Is a Gemini skill the same as an AI agent?

No. A skill is a reusable set of instructions you invoke. An AI agent carries out tasks on its own and connects to other systems. Stacking skills moves Gemini a little closer to that model, but you’re still the one calling them.

What should I do if my business depends on a Gem?

Back up its instructions and files today, then decide whether that process belongs in a personal account at all. If it’s critical, move it to a company account or a proper automation.
